News - July 2017

Well, what a month June 2017 was for SELOC!  All we did was:

- featured extensively in a BBC documentary of orienteering at MediaCityUK

- staged the North West Sprint Orienteering Championships at Sklemersdale

- staged the UK Urban League at Horwich Festival of Racing

- Champions at the Harvester B Class Handicap Trophy in the Lake District.

Here is the winning team from the Harvester, a five person relay starting at midnight on the hillside in the Lake District.  The first two legs are run in the dark with headtorches, whilst later runners get the advantage of a little sleep and daylight.

SELOC won the Harvester A class back in 1990 after coming 3rd the previous year.  Finally we are back in the prizes - the winning team was made up of Cath Wilson, Steve Wilson, Stephen Richards, Tony Davies and Kevan Latham won the B class Handicap Trophy. A great achievement for a small club like SELOC and the individuals concerned.  Next year it will be staged again on the last weekend in June 2018, so mark it down in your diary and keep it free so that you can put your names forward to run in the SELOC teams for next years event.

So I guess we can expect July to be a little quieter but we still have the following:

- Several club members competing in Lakeland Saunders Mountain Marathon, including Mark and Robert father and son pairing.

- Our own event at Amberswood, Wigan on Saturday 15 July

- British Mixed Sprint Relays at Ormskirk on Sunday 16 July.

Results From the Lakeland Saunders Mountain Marathon are in...

SELOC were well represented with Josie Greenhalgh, Albert Sunter and a new potential future champion team of Mark and Robert Seddon who came in as first generation team in the Harter Fell class and a fantastic 3rd overall out of 90+ teams, with the 4th ranked team a long way back.  Kevan Latham along with team mate Sian Calow of Dee Orienteers also competed in the Harter Fell class and came 31st overall. So a huge congratulations to all the competitors. The results can be found at The next Mountain Marathon will be the ROC ( formally the RAB) in September.

Happy O-New Year for 2016

We hope everyone has had a great festive period and are looking forward to new challenges in 2016.  If you haven't already you will recall that it is now a very good time to consider renewing your SELOC and BOF membership!  This can be done on line at the BOF website.

Our first race of the season will be on Saturday 30th January when we host the North West Night League at Alkrington Woods.  This race is run in the darkness and a torch is essential.  There are beginners courses available for those that haven't tried this format before.

Please note that the Compass Sport Trophy heat this year is on Sunday 13th March.  This competiton requires the whole club to come together to compete against other local teams.  It is not an exaggeration to say that everyone in the club, however old or o-proficient, can contribute to our chances of qualifying for this years final.  Lets hope for a great turnout and a winning performance this year after so many near misses in recent years.  This race is free to SELOC members as it is paid for by the club in recognition of your commitment and club membership fee - see paragraph above!

Haigh Hall - Saturday 28 November

Just a little reminder about Saturday's event.  The start times are from 10:30 to 12:30 on instructions from the park management so as to avoid clashing with the park run starting at 09:00.  The SELOC Junior champs are taking place here.  Also, there is a 5.6km blue course for the big kids.

The registration tent will be set up on the grass area between the main car park and the stables building.  The start and finish will be nearby.  There is a car park fee, I think about £1.50, which is an all day ticket.  The Stables cafe and shops will be open all day.

Please also note that the area to the north west around the Hall is out-of-bounds to all competitors, whether or not it is fenced.  Also, the miniature railway will be in operation so crossing the track may only take place at the designated crossing points shown on the map.  DO NOT STOP ON THE TRACK TO LOOK AT YOUR MAP - MAKE SURE IT IS CLEAR BEFORE YOU CROSS.

The weather could be bad so bring your cags - they may be compulsory!

SELOC Christmas Bash - Monday 28 December

A provisional booking has been made at the Charnley Arms in Standish for the post Christmas run-around at Ashfield Park in Standish.  We have paid a small deposit to secure our booking and they have confirmed that they will cordon off an area for us.  We have asked them to hold spaces for 40+ people.  The website is as shown below, which shows the festive and standard 'comfort' menus available to us.  The website to view the details is as shown below.
