Compass Sport Triumph!

Well we so very nearly did it i.e. beat PFO. We turned out in force at Claife Heights with one of our biggest squads for years. Complete with several new signings there was a good chance we would close the winning margin of the leading clubs. To increase our score by 52 on last year and get within just two points of PFO was at the same time thrilling and gaolling. Leaving us with all those thoughts of what if and if only ...

However, the fact remains we have made extraordinary improvements as a club in the last year. The thing to do now is to keep up with our racing, have fun and try to improve our technique further. If in particular our juniors and newcomers improve by just a few percent in the coming months then we can expect more successes very soon.

Lion King Theatre Trip

Having booked tickets over 12 months ago the club trip to see Lion King on Wednesday 27th February is fast approaching. If anyone would like to meet in Manchester for tea before the show then contact Lisa.

Compass Sport Trophy

Hopefully you have rejoined SELOC and let Alan Heron know you want to join our squad to run the Compass Sport Trophy round at Claife Heights, Hawkshead on 17th February. If you haven't already please contact Alan immediately to secure your place to run. We have put a really good squad together this year and have a great chance of qualifying - good luck to everyone.

Let's Go Training

Cath Wilson (PFO) is putting on a training session at Peel Park, Accrington on Saturday 9th February and we are all invited! A final chance to practice our orienteering skills outside of competition before the Compass Sport.

Location: Car parking will be signed off the A679 approx 1 mile west of the junction between the A679 and the A56. Approximate postcode is BB5 6HH, SD 769 293.

Time: Meet in car park at 10:15am ready for a 10:30am start. We plan to be finished and back at the car park by 12:30.

Coaching: Andy Ellis and Catherine Wilson will be running two sessions – one on map interpretation and one on accurate compass and distance judgment. The sessions have been designed to cater for all abilities, with something for the complete beginner, to exercises that will allow experienced orienteers to practice their techniques.

Kit list: The upper part of Peel Park is tussocky moorland can be pretty exposed. So please bring suitable footwear, waterproofs and hat/gloves, plus warm clothes for afterwards. You might also want to bring a spare warm top to take up onto the hill to keep warm in-between coaching exercises.

Food: You may want to bring a drink and a snack to take up onto the hillside for during the coaching session. We plan to be back at the car park by 12:30, so you may want to bring a packed lunch to have after the session – or if anyone wanted to go for a social drink / chat afterwards, the Whitakers Arms pub is only a short distance from the car park.

Cost: There will be a charge of £2/ person (or £4 per family) to cover map printing etc.

If you would like to attend, then let Cath Wilson know by Wednesday evening (6th February) to give time to make sure there are enough maps ready. When responding, please let her know what colour course you usually run.
