News - May 2014

Strinesdale, Oldham (Race - 17th May)

The May race has been moved forward to Saturday 17th May. This is to avoid the British Championships at the end of the month and the Bank Holiday the intervening weekend. This is an area we haven't visited for a while so really looking forward to it. Alison Etherden has planned yellow, orange and light green courses. Starts from 10am to 12 noon. More info ...

Saturday Park Series

The SELOC Saturday Series moves back to the Oldham area for the next two events, following a very successful run of 3 events in the Wigan area to start 2014.  First up is Alexandra Park on Saturday 26th April (Planner Matt Driver), followed by Strinesdale on Saturday 17th May - note the new date (Planner Alison Etherden).

The PFO/SELOC bowling rematch will now definitely not be on Saturday 17th May.  This date gradually came to clash with more and more events and so the bowling has been postponed till later in the summer - Saturday 5th July.

Compass Sport Trohpy Success

Well done to everyone who competed at the Compass Sport Trophy at Irwell Valley on 16 February. It was another great squad performance and built on our strong showing in 2013, when we narrowly missed out to local rivals PFO. This year we achieved almost an identical score despite a few key squad members being unavailable. This shows how much the squad is improving at the current time.

This year we lost out unfortunately to SROC. This is a club with exceptional talent and realistically it may be a few years before we can compete with them. Nonetheless we can be very proud of our performance and the main thing is to keep enjoying our orienteering and encouraging friends and family to join us!

Junior Squad in action

The SELOC junior squad will be competing at the Yvette Baker team competition on the 16th March. This is the first time in many years we will have enough juniors for a team, which is very exciting. There are now several juniors able to train every Monday night in Bolton at the weekly club nights.
It would be great if other club members could support our juniors in this competition by attending the DEE event which it is part of at Frodsham on Sunday 16 March, which is a Level C event for everyone.

GMOA Committee

The Greater Manchester Orienteering Association is a voluntary organisation which sets up and develops Permanent Orienteering Courses in Greater Manchester. It relies on income from map sales and grant funding to implement its strategies. SELOC benefits enormously from the existence of GMOA as it means the local park maps we use at many of our events are continually being kept up to date. There is also a significant bank balance, which if GMOA were ever to be disbanded would be split between the two founding clubs - MDOC and SELOC.
All members of SELOC and MDOC are members of GMOA and representatives of the two clubs are on the GMOA committee.  SELOC currently have 3 members who regularly attend the GMOA committee meetings but if anyone else would like to get involved then let us know.

Lakes 5 Days

There will be a special 5 days of orienteering in the Lake District this year, between Sunday 3rd and Friday 8th August. See for more information.
SELOC will be assisting the other north west clubs with the organisation of at least one day and it would be great if as many club members as possible can be there to help. This is important for the club as we will get a split of the profits from the competition for helping. I will let you know as soon as we know which day we will be helping on.

News - January 2014

Happy New Year 2014!

So here we are the start of another year. Hopefully you are all excited about getting stuck in to another year of orienteering.  2013 Club Champion Clive Atty is certainly excited about the coming season "My New Year's resolution for 2014 is to do more orienteering in 2014 than in 2013" - and that from the club champion - someone has got to stop him next year!

So just a quick reminder of what you can expect to get involved in at the club in the coming weeks.

Club Night - starts again 13th Jan at Eagley Junior School, Bolton.

Saturday Park Series returns at Ashfield Park, Standish on Saturday 25th January.

First club social of the year is SELOC Versus PFO Quiz Night at Marls Pits Leisure Centre, Rawtenstall from 7pm on Friday 17th January.

...and don't forget memberships can be renewed now on the BOF website. You will need to be a member to join the squad to run at the major team competition of the year - the Compass Sport Trophy heat in the Irwell Valley. This years event is Sunday 16th February.

Equipment Storage

As many of you will know Eric Burton has been looking after much of the club equipment for many years now in a shed in his garden.  The club now needs to make alternative arrangements in the very near future.

An ideal solution would be for another club member with a bit of spare room in their garden or garage to take on the kit (shed can be provided).  The kit is typically only required once or twice a year for the larger events and so this isn't an onerous task - it just requires someone with the appropriate property to volunteer to house the equipment.  Please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  if you are able to help. In the event that nobody offers to help with this then the club will have to look at commercial options for housing the kit, which will have impact club finances.

Club Champions 2013

As announced at the christmas lunch the club champions for 2013 were Clive Atty (Senior) and Lucy Seddon (Junior).  The winner of these competitions were this year derived using a very cunning mathematical equation, able to establish the best performances on the day of competition at Storthes Hall (EPOC) on Sunday 22nd December relative to usual individual performance. The committee was very grateful to Dean Thetford for devising this equation and we hope to make use of it again next year.

Volunteer of the Year 2013

The volunteer of the year competition, as voted for my the membership, was announced at the christmas dinner. The winner this year of the Allan Wilson Memorial Trophy was Matt Driver. Matt is still fairly new to orienteering but made a great contribution to the club this year putting on a night street league event and a Saturday park series (both Ramsbottom).  You may remember the problems we had putting events on in early 2013 due to heavy snow conditions over a number of weeks.  Matt's street league, for which he had drawn a brand new map from scratch, was subject to two cancellations before we finally got the race underway. When we went back to Ramsbottom later in the summer he joked he expected the bad conditions to return.

Second in the volunteer of the year award this year was 2011 winner Caroline Barcham. The club is very appreciative of all the effort Caroline has put in making the club night such a success. I know she will accept gratefully any offers to host future evenings - it is up to all of us to pitch in to make these things a happen.

News - November 2013

North West Night League 2013

It is fast approaching the time of year when orienteers take to local parks and countryside, armed only with a map, compass and headtorch.  The dates for the league are below - all Saturday evenings - check the local club websites for more details.
SROC Nov 30th 2013 Low Park Wood, near Kendal
PFO Dec 7th 2013 Dean Clough, Great Harwood
LOC 11th Jan 2014 Great Tower, near Windermere
MDOC 18th Jan 2014 Dovestone, Greenfield.
DEE 8th Feb 2014 Delamere East
SELOC 1 Mar 2014 Tandle Hill, Oldham

In addition, PFO are hosting a couple of warm-up events which SELOC members are invited to. See the PFO website for more details. These are at Towneley Park on Thursday 21 November and Clowbridge on Thursday 28th November.

Winter Street League

The street league season has got well underway, with SROC and MDOC both hosting series. There have been two events in the SROC series, including the very successful event in Wigan South hosted by SELOC and Mark Sammon, Josh Sammon & Darren Baker in particular.
The SROC series continues in Blackpool on 20th November. Strictly Come Dancing recently went in to a crazed hyperbole about the opportunity to dance in Blackpool and the same should arguably be the case for the orienteering event with the Blackpool Tower Trophy up for grabs. The series then moves on to Bolton another event hosted by SELOC on Weds Dec 4th.
These are score events with 60 or 75 minute options. You are supplied a simple map of the streets and have to collect as many points as you can in your predetermined time limit. Penalty points for being late back. Highly competitive, great winter training and good fun! Torch essential! and

Compass Sport Trophy

Advanced notice of the date for the big club competition of 2014. Last year we came so close to beating our close rivals PFO in the heat and go through to the final and it would be great to be as competitve next year. This require all club members to join the squad in the Irwell Valley (very close to home this year) on Sunday 16th February.

Club Championship Race

The club championship race will this year be included in the EPOC event on Sunday 22nd December at Storthes Hall (wrongly advertised as Rishworth Moor in last newsletter). Prizes will  be awarded at the SELOC Christmas event and lunch in the week between Christmas and New Year. There will be prizes for the best junior boy and girl, senior man and women with special recognition of the best club performance on the day - who will it be?

News - October 2013

Bolton Club Night

The Bolton club night has now returned to Eagley Junior School, where we will meet on a weekly basis throughout the winter. Sessions run every Monday night from 6.30pm to 8pm. No special equipment required - just turn up and join us.

Annual General Meeting 2013

The SELOC Annual General Meeting this year will be this Monday night - Monday 14th October 8.00pm at Edgworth Cricket Club, Bolton Road, Edgworth, BL7 0AP. Nominations for posts on the committee are now being taken.

Don't forget that this is much more than a boring meeting, with keenly anticipated items including the 'View from the Chair' speech, pie and peas supper and quiz prepared by resident University boffins Rachel Deegan and Joe Mercer!

Street League Returns

We are very close to the return of the winter street league series. SELOC support both the SROC series in Lancashire and also the MDOC series in South Manchester and Cheshire. Expect the biggest showing to be the SROC series, with SELOC organising 2 of the 11 events - Wigan South on Weds Nov 6th and Bolton North on Weds Dec 4th.

These are score events with 60 or 75 minute options. You are supplied a simple map of the streets and have to collect as many points as you can in your predetermined time limit. Penalty points for being late back. Highly competitive, great winter training and good fun! Torch essential!

Club Championship Race

Advanced warning that the club championship race will this year be included in the EPOC event on Sunday 22nd December at Rishworth Moor. Prizes will be awarded at the SELOC Christmas event and lunch in the week between Christmas and New Year. Details of the format of this competition will follow later.
