SELOC Urban Weekend - 15th & 16th June

This is advanced warning about our really exciting, premier events of the year. On Saturday June 15th we are having a very large urban event based in Salford Quays. Competitors on the longest courses will travel by Metrolink to Manchester before racing back via Spinningfields, Castlefield Locks and Ordsall Hall. Other courses will be contained within Salford Quays with registration and the finish for all courses being outside Media City.

On Sunday June 16th we are having a double sprint with rural prologue in Lever Park and then a mass start sprint in Horwich town centre, as part of the Horwich Festival of Racing. Please put these dates in your diary now!

Club Night - GPS Training

Have you thought about getting yourself a GPS tracker to use whilst orienteering? Do you really want to know where you went? Come and find out about how to use the GPS equipment club night has. Loans available to SELOC members. The session on 11th March at Eagley School will look at using GPS trackers and uploading the routes produced into the orienteering software RouteGadget.

As a follow up session we will have a small street event in Bromley Cross on Monday 18th March. GPS trackers will be issued so you can record your routes.

Compass Sport Triumph!

Well we so very nearly did it i.e. beat PFO. We turned out in force at Claife Heights with one of our biggest squads for years. Complete with several new signings there was a good chance we would close the winning margin of the leading clubs. To increase our score by 52 on last year and get within just two points of PFO was at the same time thrilling and gaolling. Leaving us with all those thoughts of what if and if only ...

However, the fact remains we have made extraordinary improvements as a club in the last year. The thing to do now is to keep up with our racing, have fun and try to improve our technique further. If in particular our juniors and newcomers improve by just a few percent in the coming months then we can expect more successes very soon.

Lion King Theatre Trip

Having booked tickets over 12 months ago the club trip to see Lion King on Wednesday 27th February is fast approaching. If anyone would like to meet in Manchester for tea before the show then contact Lisa.

Compass Sport Trophy

Hopefully you have rejoined SELOC and let Alan Heron know you want to join our squad to run the Compass Sport Trophy round at Claife Heights, Hawkshead on 17th February. If you haven't already please contact Alan immediately to secure your place to run. We have put a really good squad together this year and have a great chance of qualifying - good luck to everyone.

Let's Go Training

Cath Wilson (PFO) is putting on a training session at Peel Park, Accrington on Saturday 9th February and we are all invited! A final chance to practice our orienteering skills outside of competition before the Compass Sport.

Location: Car parking will be signed off the A679 approx 1 mile west of the junction between the A679 and the A56. Approximate postcode is BB5 6HH, SD 769 293.

Time: Meet in car park at 10:15am ready for a 10:30am start. We plan to be finished and back at the car park by 12:30.

Coaching: Andy Ellis and Catherine Wilson will be running two sessions – one on map interpretation and one on accurate compass and distance judgment. The sessions have been designed to cater for all abilities, with something for the complete beginner, to exercises that will allow experienced orienteers to practice their techniques.

Kit list: The upper part of Peel Park is tussocky moorland can be pretty exposed. So please bring suitable footwear, waterproofs and hat/gloves, plus warm clothes for afterwards. You might also want to bring a spare warm top to take up onto the hill to keep warm in-between coaching exercises.

Food: You may want to bring a drink and a snack to take up onto the hillside for during the coaching session. We plan to be back at the car park by 12:30, so you may want to bring a packed lunch to have after the session – or if anyone wanted to go for a social drink / chat afterwards, the Whitakers Arms pub is only a short distance from the car park.

Cost: There will be a charge of £2/ person (or £4 per family) to cover map printing etc.

If you would like to attend, then let Cath Wilson know by Wednesday evening (6th February) to give time to make sure there are enough maps ready. When responding, please let her know what colour course you usually run.

Ramsbottom Street League

SELOC are putting on the next SROC Night Street League event in Ramsbottom on Wednesday 6th February. Based at the Hare and Hounds pub this is a 60 or 75 minute score event. Start any time between 6.30pm and 7.30pm and navigate to as many of the control locations marked on the supplied map as you can. Different controls have varying weighted scores attached and penalty deductions apply for every minute taken to return to the pub after your specified time period has elapsed. Why not stay in the pub after you have run to compare routes whilst sampling some of the award winning beers and food available. Lights and high visibility clothing advisable (for runnning, not necessarily for beer drinking!).

Snow & ice impacts Bolton club night

It has been a frustrating start to the new year with the two Monday night Bolton club night sessions being cancelled due to snow and ice. Similarly, the Ramsbottom night street event has been postponed twice and is now rescheduled for Wednesday 6th February. However, the current cold spell can't continue forever and we have an exciting programme of events for the next few weeks at Bolton club night - see below.  We are also fairly confident that the morning and evening events at Amberswood, Wigan will go ahead this weekend as the area is very low level and is accessed directly from the urban road network.

Wicked Theatre Trip

There are still tickets available for the Wicked Theatre trip on Wednesday 23rd October 2013. Tickets are £37.50 and you can reserve your tickets by contacting Lisa Kidd at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Membership 2013

Note that SELOC membership is now due for 2013. This is perhaps easiest achieved on-line on the BOF website. The membership system has been dramatically simplified this year so there is only national junior (£4) and national senior (£20) memberships available. Some of the benefits of joining the club are:
1. Free Compass Sport Cup entry
2. Regular SELOC and BOF newsletters
3. Free National relay race entries
4. BOF discounts at races outside our immediate area
5. Required to compete in national competitions
6. Show your support for the sport of orienteering at the local and national level
