World Orienteering Champs on TV

BBC2 Scotland's Adventure Show this Sunday, 27 September, will be carrying a full report on WOC 2015. Those of you who were in Scotland in August may want to revisit the week; those who weren't should certainly have a look to see what they missed and how our sport can be portrayed to the public via technology such as GPS. Spread the word to your friends who still don't really get it when you try to explain what orienteering is all about.

Although ordinary Freeview won't pick up BBC2 Scotland around here, you can get it via Sky, FreeSat or iPlayer. The programme airs at 19.00, so an ideal way to relax after an excellent day on Haslingden Grane.

Haslingden Grane Event

Our annual Level B event is fast approaching on Sunday 27th September, our largest event of the year at which we offer the whole range of courses from white through to black.

This year we return to Haslingden Grane.  However, the premimum quarry area of the map has been completely remapped by Dave Peel in 2015.  Making extensive use of Lidar data, Dave has managed to improve the contour detail in the quarries immesurably. It will therefore be very exciting to see how this part of the map measures up for those who have made previous outings through this tricky terrain.

The parking this year is in a farmers field, high above the valley and up near to the start/finish area which is close to the quarries.  All courses therefore get the opportunity to experience the best of the terrain without a long walk to the start/finish or a large ascent within the race itself.

Entry is available on Fabian now.  Final details are here.

Horwich Festival of Races - Sunday 21 June

SELOC return to the Horwich Festival of Races on Sunday 21 June.  This is a multi-sport event in Horwich, Bolton involving running, cycling and orienteering. The roads are shut for the day in the centre of Horwich for the events.  We have a two-part race with an off-road sprint in Lever Park in the morning, followed by an urban-sprint mass start race in the town centre in the afternoon.  It is quite unusual to compete in front of a large crowd but this is your chance. Entries are open still on till Wednesday night.  Final details are here. Entries on the day while map stocks last.

Summer Garden Party - Saturday 4 July

Continuing our 50th anniversary celebrations we are going to have a summer garden party on Saturday 4th July.  This will be held at Caroline Barcham's house in Crawshawbooth in Rossendale.  All welcome.  The festivities will run from 2pm till late. SELOC will provide a buffet tea at £5 per person (£20 maximum per family group). Please bring your own drinks.

Caroline will be providing maps of the POC course 3 miles up the road at Clowbridge and if anyone is so inclined they can do a POC challenge to see how quickly they can visit all the controls.

Please let Caroline know if you intend to come so we can guage food requirements.

Crown Green Bowling - Saturday 25 July

SELOC will again be holding the bowling afternoon at Edgworth. This year the event will take place at 2pm.  Please contact Paul Booth so that he can guage numbers.  There is the option to go for a meal after the bowling together in a local pub so please let Paul know if you are interested in coming along.

Summer Events

The SELOC events continue through the summer.  We will not be putting on an event in May now. To compensate we have 2 events in June.  On Saturday 13 June we will have a small event on Horrocks Wood, Bolton. On Sunday 21st June we have our double part sprint as part of the Horwich Festival of Racing - more details about the orienteering and how to enter see our race flyer here.

50th Anniversary Weekend

We had a super weekend in West Yorkshire celebrating our 50th Anniversary at the end of April.  47 members of the club had some involvement with the weekend.  There was the meal at the Top Brink pub on Friday night, race at Hardcastle Crags on Saturday - results, cake, orienteering board games and 2 nights stay at the Mankinholes YHA, training at Jerusalem Farm, Calderdale on Sunday.

Compass Sport Trophy

The club competed in the Compass Sport Trophy this year at Sherwood Pines in Nottinghamshire. This is the club competition, which requires the whole club to turn up and compete together to beat the other teams.  As in recent years, the whole squad performed marvelously well. This year we finished 2nd out of 8 teams in our competition for small clubs.  It must be the benefit of our weekly orienteering school, which is helping us to improve the squad year on year.

The juniors did absolutely great. There were Lucy Seddon, Robert Seddon and Josh Sammon on Orange and Oliver Heib on Green.  The young adults are really strong now, whilst there were strong performances from Mark Seddon, Kevan Latham and others of more mature years!

Unfortunatley we didn't qualify for the final this year but the way we are improving it can't be far away.

JK Easter Weekend

A very big orienteering festival is coming to the North West this Easter 3rd to 7th April. On Good Friday, SELOC are helping with the organisation to put on a sprint race around the grounds of Lancaster University. There are anticipated to be 1000s of people in attendance so this is a massive event to be involved in.

Orienteering is predominantely run by volunteers and without them events like this just wouldn't be possible. Everyone should feel really proud to be part of this as it is really quite an achievement to help put on these events.

You can find more details on the weekend at JK.

50th Anniversary Celebrations

The SELOC 50th anniversary celebrations continue in April with our big hostel weekend away. Contact Caroline now to confirm your place. We are having a race at Hardcastle Crags near Hebden Bridge on the Saturday and training using a permanent orienteering course local to the hostel on the Sunday.
