North West Night League Sponsorship

BrightBikeLights are again sponsoring the NWNL this year.  A 10% discount code is available which gives 10% off headlights - the code is NORTHWESTNIGHT (no spaces all uppercase) and can be entered during checkout.  It currently applies to headlights but I will expand it to other lights too over the next day or so - if anyone has any issues in the meantime they can contact me”

SELOC will be hosting our round of the BrightBikeLights North West Night League at Alkrington Woods on Saturday 30 January.  This is in the evening and is on our newly mapped area, adjacent to the M60 near Middleton.

28/11/2015 SROC Event Sizergh Castle, Kendal

05/12/2015 PFO Event Nick O Pendle, Clitheroe

09/01/2016 LOC Event Birkrigg Common, Ulverston

13/02/2016 MDOC Event Phillips Park, Bury + Northern Championship

19/03/2016 DEE Event Little Budworth Country Park, near Tarporley, Cheshire

Compass Sport Trophy Heat

Next year the club will attend the DEE qualifying round of the Compass Sport Trophy at Bickerton Hill in Cheshire. This is on Sunday 13th March and we require the whole club to support the event to achieve the best possible result.

Christmas Event, Lunch and Prize Giving

Our Christmas event and meal will be on Monday 28th December.  The "race" in the morning will be at Ashfield Park, Wigan at 11am. THe venue for the meal will likely be Chandley Arms in Standish with food from 1pm.

Event Safety Course

DEE are holding an Event Safety Course on Saturday 21 November, which is available for SELOC members to attend.  My understanding is that it will be run close to Hightown Dunes, near Crosby, following DEE's event of the same day, which is in the morning.  If anyone is interested in attending this course then I suggest you contact me in the first instance for more information.

The Event Safety Course is a very useful introduction to all things safety associated with putting on an orienteering event, including completing risk assessments which are a mandatory requirement of BOF insurance. I have attended such a course in the past and, although a little dry in places, I would suggest the course would prove useful to anyone involved in planning/organising any orienteering event from our local Saturday morning events upwards.  You are required to attend a course if you have aspiration to organise/control events of level C or above.  Once you have attended the course there is no requirement to attend refresher courses.

Sorry for the short notice on this one but I would expect there to be other opportunities to attend this type of course within our region fairly soon and the committee will keep you posted.

This vent will take place at Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre from 2 - 5pm following our Schools League Event at Hightown Dunes. Contact Norman Hall for more information - This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

SELOC Club Championships

At the AGM it was agreed through a vote of the assembled membership that this years club championship would be held within the CLARO event at Brimham Rocks, which is quite close to Harrogate.  This event will be on the Sunday 22nd November and is entry on the day only.  Club champion prizes will be awarded at our christmas dinner, based on peoples performance on the day relative to their overall ability as indicated by the BOF ranking points.

There has since been a slight change of plan for the Junior Club Championship.  This change does not effect the senior competition which will still be run on Sunday 22 November as part of the CLARO Brimham Rocks event.  However, the committee concluded following further considerations that it wasn't an ideal venue for the junior event because it is fairly likely that attendance by SELOC juniors will be low.

It was therefore decided that the Junior Club Championship would be held within our own Haigh Hall event on Saturday 28 November.  Clearly this should be much more accessible to our juniors and we would hope as many as possible will be able to attend.  As originally planned, prizes for both the senior and junior competitions will be presented at the Xmas event on 28th December.

The committee have resolved to consider the format of the club championships for next year earlier in the calendar with a view to choosing an event that will suit seniors and juniors alike.

SELOC AGM

The SELOC AGM was held on 19th October.  Annmarie Thetford was elected chair of the club for the coming year.  Pete Kidd will continue to support Annmarie as vice-chair through the coming weeks as she finds her feet in the new role. Over 20 club members turned out for the AGM.

After the AGM we had our annual quiz, which was set by last years winner Mark Seddon.  After 30 questions testing orienteering, geography and music knowledge David Rose emerged victor by a single point and wins the opportunity to set the quiz next year. Yet again the hospitality at Edgworth Cricket Club was great and there wasn't much of the pie and peas left over.

This year club night was held in Edgworth prior to the AGM. Matt Driver had drawn a new map and the results are shown below.  Joe Mercer as winner will set a course before the AGM next year.

 Posn Name Time Points 1 Joe Mercer 43m 680 2 Mark Seddon 44m 650 3 Paul Turner 44m 650 4 Rachel Mercer 44m 640 5 Jason Middleton 44m 640 6 Steve White 44m 570 7 Paul Booth 42m 470 8 Steve Round 43m 440 9 Toby Middleton + Janet 42m 380 10 Oliver Heib 44m 330

World Orienteering Champs on TV

BBC2 Scotland's Adventure Show this Sunday, 27 September, will be carrying a full report on WOC 2015. Those of you who were in Scotland in August may want to revisit the week; those who weren't should certainly have a look to see what they missed and how our sport can be portrayed to the public via technology such as GPS. Spread the word to your friends who still don't really get it when you try to explain what orienteering is all about.

Although ordinary Freeview won't pick up BBC2 Scotland around here, you can get it via Sky, FreeSat or iPlayer. The programme airs at 19.00, so an ideal way to relax after an excellent day on Haslingden Grane.

Haslingden Grane Event

Our annual Level B event is fast approaching on Sunday 27th September, our largest event of the year at which we offer the whole range of courses from white through to black.

This year we return to Haslingden Grane.  However, the premimum quarry area of the map has been completely remapped by Dave Peel in 2015.  Making extensive use of Lidar data, Dave has managed to improve the contour detail in the quarries immesurably. It will therefore be very exciting to see how this part of the map measures up for those who have made previous outings through this tricky terrain.

The parking this year is in a farmers field, high above the valley and up near to the start/finish area which is close to the quarries.  All courses therefore get the opportunity to experience the best of the terrain without a long walk to the start/finish or a large ascent within the race itself.

Entry is available on Fabian now.  Final details are here.

SELOC return to the Horwich Festival of Races on Sunday 21 June.  This is a multi-sport event in Horwich, Bolton involving running, cycling and orienteering. The roads are shut for the day in the centre of Horwich for the events.  We have a two-part race with an off-road sprint in Lever Park in the morning, followed by an urban-sprint mass start race in the town centre in the afternoon.  It is quite unusual to compete in front of a large crowd but this is your chance. Continuing our 50th anniversary celebrations we are going to have a summer garden party on Saturday 4th July.  This will be held at Caroline Barcham's house in Crawshawbooth in Rossendale.  All welcome.  The festivities will run from 2pm till late. Caroline will be providing maps of the POC course 3 miles up the road at Clowbridge and if anyone is so inclined they can do a POC challenge to see how quickly they can visit all the controls.

Please let Caroline know if you intend to come so we can guage food requirements.

SELOC will again be holding the bowling afternoon at Edgworth. This year the event will take place at 2pm.  Please contact Paul Booth so that he can guage numbers.  There is the option to go for a meal after the bowling together in a local pub so please let Paul know if you are interested in coming along.

Summer Events

The SELOC events continue through the summer.  We will not be putting on an event in May now. To compensate we have 2 events in June.  On Saturday 13 June we will have a small event on Horrocks Wood, Bolton. On Sunday 21st June we have our double part sprint as part of the Horwich Festival of Racing - more details about the orienteering and how to enter see our race flyer here.

50th Anniversary Weekend

We had a super weekend in West Yorkshire celebrating our 50th Anniversary at the end of April.  47 members of the club had some involvement with the weekend.  There was the meal at the Top Brink pub on Friday night, race at Hardcastle Crags on Saturday - results, cake, orienteering board games and 2 nights stay at the Mankinholes YHA, training at Jerusalem Farm, Calderdale on Sunday.
