Chesham Woods, 19 July 2014

Did anyone spot that it was raining this morning? Well 24 hardy souls didn't let it put them off and ventured undeterred to Chesham Woods, Bury for SELOCs latest Saturday morning race. Results here ...

Roy Stevenson had planned the courses. Pete and Roy met at 8am to put the course out. At 10am we were a little worried there may not be any, let alone many competitors turn up! First off the start line was Chris Owen who definitely encountered much of the worst weather. There appeared to be some judicious watching of the weather forecast as most people turned up around 11am as the rain eased. Well it didn't last long. As the last competitors were running around 12 noon the rain increased again.

Thanks go to Paul Turner for printing the maps, David Bolton for helping bring in controls and Caroline Barcham for taking the lead on registration. The treasurer of the club was too late getting out of bed to have a run but arrived in time to collect his money!

Well done everyone - I hope you enjoyed.

P.S. If you were thinking you may have been the furthest travelled today you probably didn't realise we had two competitors over from Australia - just getting in some practice before the Lakes 5 - look out for Paul and Julia there.

Right, we now have the summer break with no SELOC race in August. However, that doesn't mean you can't orienteer. Some club members are racing in Switzerland in the next couple of weeks and then we have the Lakes 5 Day Sunday 3rd to Friday 8th August. SELOC are helping with the start at the Grizedale event on Tuesday 5th August - please come and join us and support your club.

The next SELOC event will be our big race of the year - level B - at Clowbridge on Sunday September 28th September. Again please come any support your club by running and helping at this event. For those who often only compete at the Saturday series this is a great opportunity to test your skills on more technical terrain close to home.

The next Saturday series race will now be on Saturday 25th October at Nuttall Park in Bury.

Have a great summer - Pete Kidd (SELOC Chair).

Thanks to everyone who braved the rain to be at Chesham Woods on Saturday. After the storm the night before we were taking bets that we would have no takers for the event. With most of you opting for the Light Green course there were some very close times by the end. Planning longer legs at Chesham is well nigh impossible as the useful bit of the area consists of five bits of woodland almost joined together. Thanks for the comments from those who enjoyed the experience.
My thanks to Pete Kidd who put out controls then set up the start, Caroline in the dry in the tent doing the entries and download and Dave Bolton for bringing in controls after his initial soaking.
Roy Stevenson
